Compton, Brook, Hulverstone

and Mottistone

Isle of Wight

Old postcards are sometimes poorly produced and grainy, I've done my best to scan them. Please click thumbnails for full size picture. Dates are from the card or my estimate (where possible). The manufacturer of the card is shown in brackets (where available).

This page covers the area eastwards from Freshwater Bay, Isle of Wight to Brook together with the inland villages of Hulverstone and Mottistone.

compton cliffs looking east

Compton looking west

Looking east across Compton Bay, 1956. This area is liable

to subsidence, the road just to the left has recently

been reinforced at considerable cost. (Merwood)

Compton Bay,  looking towards Freshwater Bay. The chalets on the

left were known as the 'Timber Bungalows'. These have now fallen

into the sea, as has much of the land shown in the foreground. (Dean)

Compton Chine

Brooke church

Compton Chine dated about 1910. This is just before where the white

cliffs start on the picture opposite. It has now completely eroded.

An undated card, probably from around the 1950's of Brooke church. (Baker)

Brooke lifeboat

Brook Bay

A picture, rather than a postcard of Brooke lifeboat.

Undated, but from the early part of the century.

Brook Bay, around 1950. (Dean)

Brook House

Hulverstone village

Brook House, built in about 1780, although on the site of an old

14th century manor house. The lake has been removed. Dated 1907.

Hulverstone village from a card dated 1906.

At the bottom of the road is the Sun Inn. (Gubbins)

Mottistone Manor

Mottistone manor gateway

Mottistone Manor, the oldest part of this dates from the 15th

century. It is now in the care of the National Trust. (Dixon)

Mottistone Manor gateway, undated.

Mottistone Church

The Longstone

Mottistone Church about 1910 (Peacock)

The Longstone at Mottistone Down, probably from the 1930's. This 13 foot stone is a probable remnant of a Neolithic long barrow.
